Yes. Footy = Football. Specifically Australian Rules Football, a strange mutant version of gaelic football where the guys don't wear protection (unlike US football), and is revered to such a near-religious degree over here, inspiring people to look the other way when the star players of their favourite teams are fucking meatheaded thugs and/or junkies who openly (Society-Pages openly) hang out with organised crime figures, as long as they, y'know, can kick a ball.

Also: I hate the societal hero worship that these fucking idiots get. They just kick a ball around: it's not like they're saving lives, or trying to make the world a better place.
The same goes for every other sports "star", actor, "celebrity", religious figure (ie, the Pope - he's in the country at the moment)...
